Living in Taverham

Before I forget, interesting news: the local newspaper here is interested in doing an article on my parent's lives here during the war, specifically my mother being a GI Warbride! Watch this space....
Shaken......not stirred!
So.....I'm in bed at 1:00am with the cat at my feet and Roger to my side, when suddenly - the earth moves! I wanted to say something smug like "was it as good for you....?" but instead I stated the obvious: "Earthquake!" Yup, 5.2 on the scale - which I called. After living in So. California you get a feel for these things. Interestingly enough Jingle didn't stir. What can you expect from an 18 year old cat? Instead she waited to do her nightly routine of keeping us awake at 5:00am. Now THAT'S an earthquake when you're sound asleep. Back to the quake, it's the talk of the town this morning. Everyone is telling their experiences. Remember, this is unusual for England, the last one being in 2002. And wouldn't you know, the earthquake equipment at UEA isn't working so it probably is safe to say it wasn't recorded. Anyway, I'll remember the date as it's my sister-in-law's birthday today (Happy Birthday Sally!). And with that, time to get on and start the day.
Until the next quake (real or imagined....),
Jill

Ok, two things:
1. Another word pronounced differently here is "Combative". The Yanks say "comBATive". The Brits say "COMba-tive". Enquiring minds need to know.
2. Take a look at this great photo Roger took yesterday before work! Of course it will probably load above this caption so this wording won't be insync with it but oh well.
More ramblings lata!

Big news: We finally got my birthday gift, a treadmill, up and running today (only 5 months late). It's been delayed due to working on the house and both of us being ill. The thing is bigger then I anticipated so we've managed to put it in the guest room for now. Think of me every night walking off the pounds after dinner. Never say never. After 3 weeks looking here and there, we have finally bought a car! It is a Vauxhall Vectra which, I'm told, is the equivelent to a Chrysler in the States. We are pleased as it only has 4,600 miles on the clock and is 10 months old! Our poor little Mondeo has seen better days and it's time to be retired. So, something to write home about finally!
Speaking of writing home, I was talking to my Mom about her journey over to the States in 1945. She gave me the name of the ship she traveled on, the Thomas H. Barry. I looked it up online and lo and behold, found a website with a photo of some warbrides.....and guess who is in the back row, 3rd from left??! Check out my Mom above at age 22!
It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood - in the 60's I'd guess. In San Diego I'd think that was cold, but over here it's a heat wave. England is a beautiful country, especially when the sun shines. Roger has been out gardening today.....our front yard is quite big. Having just said that, I just heard the lawn mower start up so he is well on his way to a hard day's work being completed. Next on our agenda is to get the back yard patio finished.
We are tossing ideas around for a vacation this year. On the top of the list is Amsterdam, a Med cruise and a trip to Wales and Ireland in the summer. I've come to realize that although we are closer to Europe here, in as much as cruises go, they are still twice as expensive to the same destination compared to the States. If we do go on this one, I will pay for it from the US side. Handy having a foot in both countries.
Watched a couple of good films last night. One is Premonition with Sandra Bullock and the other is Disturbia. The second one was a real heart-pounder! Been lucky with films recently. We go down to the local Garage station/convenience store in Drayton to rent them. Only 1 1/2 miles or so away.
This next week we are going to London to visit with our Greek comrades whom we met in Tolon. We had a reunion here in August with them and now we are traversing down their way for more of the same. Looking forward to it! Watch this space.
Ta-ra for now,
Jill
